I was one of those who would stay away from Communion for some time because of sin – until I realised I was relying on my works and not my faith.

I still won’t receive if I feel like I’ve done something very bad until I go to confession. All in all, I’m trying to take part in Communion more frequently as it is the biggest blessing.

I just now found this article when I was doing a search. Thank you for confirming what I have been thinking for many years. I get really frustrated when our pastor uses this verse to talk about how Christians should examine themselves for any unconfessed sin before partaking of the elements. This is completely wrong and inaccurate theology when it comes to our salvation. We can’t do anything in and of ourselves to merit the Lord’s favor. He sees us through the blood of Jesus as completely sinless and pure, so communion is allowable for any believer at any time! We are already forgiven, so there’s nothing for which to ask forgiveness. I could see a time of confession where we simply acknowledge the fact that we messed up and walked in our flesh, but it’s simply an acknowledgment and a realization that we need to step back into our true identity as the Spirit-filled believers that we are. We don’t need to be groveling at the feet of Jesus, begging him to forgive us because we did something wrong yesterday and now we have to have all our ducks in a row before we partake of the elements. That is completely works-based which is exactly what the Lord does NOT want us doing.
